Congratulations to our team on the opening of the new Hyatt Place Hotel at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst, Ohio. The six-story, 135-unit hotel has been a year in the making. The project includes a five-level, 355-space parking deck, for which Donley’s also self-performed the cast-in-place structural concrete.


The average bolt of lightning carries over 100,000,000 volts and can reach out over 100 miles. It is estimated that the odds of being struck by lightning over your lifetime is 1 in 3,000. 

There are many ways a strike can result in an injury.  A direct strike, usually results in cardiac arrest and/or stoppage of breathing.  A side flash may occur when the body of a person provides an alternate or parallel path for the current.  Conducted current from a lightning flash may range from a tingling shock to a massive current diverted from a poorly grounded electric power pole through the wiring system. Step voltage radiates out through the ground from a struck tree or pole. Fires and fallen trees from lightning strikes can also cause injury.

Rubber-soled shoes provide absolutely no protection from lightning.  If you can hear thunder, you are within 10 miles of a storm and are within reach of lightning.  An automobile can offer protection by acting like a Faraday cage, provided that the occupants do not touch the metal of the car while inside. There are several things one can do if caught outdoors when a lightning storm strikes. Take shelter inside a building or car (do not touch any of the metal of the car while inside), and close the windows and doors. Get off equipment immediately. Get out of the water and get away from it. Do not take refuge under any tall, isolated object, such as a tree. Standing under a group of trees shorter than others in the area is better than being in the open. Avoid electric fences, clothes lines, telephone poles and any other conductor. Put down any object that might conduct electricity. If you are outside with no protection get to a low spot, make your body as low to the ground as possible but do not lay flat on the earth. Curl on your side or drop to your knees and bend forward putting your hands on your knees. If there is a group of people, spread out. If someone feels there hairs stand on end, it may mean lightning is about to strike.
Stay calm and keep low.

If someone is struck by lightning, they do not contain and electrical charge. Provide first aid immediately for any injury that is visible, and be prepared to provide CPR. Immediately call 9-1-1

Walkways shall be provided where employees or equipment are required or permitted to cross over excavations that are greater the 6 foot deep. This is highly recommended for all cross overs.

Guardrails must meet the same standards we use for all other guardrails:
  • Meet the 200 lb rating in all directions
  • 42 Inches (+/- 3 inches) Top Rail height
  • Mid-rail half-way between the working surface and the top rail
  • Toe board installed
** Note that the toe board is not installed because no one is working beneath this nor is the excavation 6 foot deep. 
Our work for Public Square has officially been completed. Project team members, Josh Zielinski and Ray Painter, were celebrating the success of the project as seen below!

Cleveland Public Square will officially open on Thursday with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Frank Jackson. The Donley’s team was at an event last week to thank the team members and funders. The speakers highlighted the contributions of the many partners involved in the project. Donley’s was thanked not only for our work as Design/Builder but for helping to raise $1,000,000 for the project. James Corner of JCFO, the international design team leader, praised Donley’s as the perfect partner bringing passion and commitment to delivering the design. 


Duty to Have Protection:
  • Each employee shall be protected from falling from exposed sides or edges, and objects falling from work areas 6 feet above lower levels. This protection can be guardrails, personal fall arrest systems, safety nets, or covers.
  • Guardrails are the preferred method as they are passive systems that protect workers below from falling objects and workers on the elevated work area from falling off.

Guardrails:
  • Accepted form of Fall Protection in many situations: Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Bridges.
  • Can be made of many different types of materials: wood, steel, wire rope, composites.
  • The top rail must be able to withstand 200lbs of downward and outward force.
  • The mid- rail must be able to withstand 150lbs of downward and outward force. Mid-rails should midway between top rail and working surface. 
  • Top rails must be 42 inches tall plus or minus 3 inches as measured adjacent to the rail.
  • TOE-BOARDS MUST BE USED IF THERE IS THE POSSIBLITY OF THINGS FALLING OVER THE EDGE!
  • Must be used when wall openings are larger than 18” wide and 30” tall.

The selection process is comprehensive, closely examining each candidate’s commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. It includes: the review of a company’s commitment to management, active employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.
Engineering News-Record 2016 Top 400 Contractors List just came out and Donley’s has made the list!  We are ranked #258 out of 400 total contractors from all over the United States. This list is measured based off total 2015 revenue as well as any international revenue.  It is an honor to be among the companies on this exclusive list.  

“The market finally has come all the way back to pre-recession levels for U.S. general contractors and construction managers,” the ENR reports with 323 of the firms reporting domestic profits and a total of over $249 billion in revenue. The new Hilton Hotel located in downtown Cleveland opened at the beginning of this month, two years and two months after the groundbreaking. Donley's is proud to have provided concrete services on this amazing new hotel on the historic downtown Cleveland Mall.  Our team along with Cuyahoga County, Hilton Hotels, Turner Construction, Cooper Cary, VOA Associates and Van Aukin Akins Architects are extremely proud of the work done for the hotel.

“More than 2,100 workers, cranking at almost record speed to be ready in time for the Republican National Convention,” cleveland.com reports (view full article along with more pictures here).  The hotel along with many other Cleveland projects such as Public Square are all helping to revitalize downtown! 






Getting to and from work platforms is important to both safety and production. Normally, ladders are the selected method. Follow these safe work practices to assure safe access and egress to and from wall form work platforms:


  • Once the wall form work platform is constructed, ladders or other approved methods must be used to access it. If the elevation change is greater than 19 inches when stepping from the floor to the work platform, install a step for safe access.
  • Workers ARE NOT permitted to climb the form or rebar to gain access to a wall form work platform. It makes NO DIFFERENCE that a worker is tied-off during the climbing process. The hazard with 100% tie-off while climbing the form to access a work platform involves the positions workers are in as they attempt to climb on and off the work platform. In addition, the vertical form itself does not have the same climbing characteristics as a ladder.
  • You are permitted to climb the vertical face of the wall form only when work is performed on the form, for example, when installing or removing taper-ties.  Make sure walls are braced before climbing.
  • When you’re working off a work platform, fall protection is required if your feet are 6 feet or more above a lower level. This is typically provided through the use of guardrails on the back side of the working platform and ensuring the platform is at least 39 inches below the top of the form. If this is not feasible, there are a few options available:
    • Install a 2nd working platform, complete with guardrails, on the opposite side of the wall form
    • Install a guardrail system at the standard 21-inch (midrail) and 42-inch (top rail) heights on the opposite side of the wall form
    • Practice 100% fall protection using retractable lanyards (this is the last resort to be used ONLY if nothing else is feasible)
  • Remember, Anchorage point for 6 foot shock absorbing lanyards must be 18.5 feet from the lower level and 14.5 feet for retractable lanyards.
  • Falling onto rebar is also a serious hazard as well. When working over rebar the rebar must be protected. Wood or metal reinforced plastic rebar caps must be used. Standard plastic rebar caps that are not reinforced are NOT approved protection.
